United Methodist Women is an integral part of the United Methodist Church. "In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women." (The Book of Discipline 2008)
With approximately 1 million members, United Methodist Women is the largest lay women's organization of a major Protestant denomination in the U.S.A. The Virginia Conference United Methodist Women has over 30,000 members in almost 900 local units throughout Virginia. Chances are very likely that there is a unit in a United Methodist Church near you.
Women actively choose to become involved in this inclusive mission organization.
Membership shall be open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong.
Membership is for the woman who finds meaning in her church and is drawn to its fellowship, who wants to combine fellowship with study, worship and outreach opportunities, who feels she has gifts that are to be shared with others, who seeks a supportive community to affirm her own sense of purpose and commitment to God through Jesus Christ.
Regardless of all designations of age, race or financial/marital/employment status, each member is regarded as a person of unique value.
In addition to having general local units, VAUMW has special units targeting younger members, such as:
Under 40
College/University Women
Teens
Membership in United Methodist Woman can be expressed in one or more of the following ways: attendance at meetings; undesignated giving to support global mission; intercessory prayer, meaningful community involvement, participation in varied events, projects, issues and concerns of Women's Division; and accepting leadership responsibility.
To find a general unit, contact your local United Methodist Church. For more information on starting or attending a College/University Women and Teens unit, visit http://gbgm-umc.org/umw/youngumw/ .
The United Methodist Women are a community of women who are:
Faithful
Purposeful

Our Purpose can tell an even better story about what we believe.
