Who Are We?

We have members in local units across the conference.  These include units of all sizes...from units found in small, rural churches, to units found in large, urban churches.  And, our membership is intergenerational, from exciting new circles for elementary age girls and high school & college young women...to circles that include long time members age 100+, and everything in between!  No matter the size of the local unit, or the age of its members, ALL represent women ORGANIZED FOR MISSION, and committed to the PURPOSE of United Methodist Women.

United Methodist Women is a community of women, whose PURPOSE is:

  • to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;

  • to develop a creative, supportive fellowship;

  • and to expand concepts of mission through participation

  • in the global ministries of the church.

We welcome new members and are always excited to share about the many ways that United Methodist Women are involved in mission...making a difference, every day, in the lives of women, children and youth...around the world, and in our own communities. If you would like more information about United Methodist Women in the Virginia Conference, contact any of the conference officers or district presidents , from your area. Each of those officers is willing to help!

United Methodist Women is an integral part of the United Methodist Church. "In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women." (The Book of Discipline 2008)

With approximately 1 million members, United Methodist Women is the largest lay women's organization of a major Protestant denomination in the U.S.A. The Virginia Conference United Methodist Women has over 30,000 members in almost 900 local units throughout Virginia. Chances are very likely that there is a unit in a United Methodist Church near you.

Women actively choose to become involved in this inclusive mission organization.

Membership shall be open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong.

Membership is for the woman who finds meaning in her church and is drawn to its fellowship, who wants to combine fellowship with study, worship and outreach opportunities, who feels she has gifts that are to be shared with others, who seeks a supportive community to affirm her own sense of purpose and commitment to God through Jesus Christ.

We welcome new members, and new local units, and are always excited to share about the many ways that United Methodist Women are involved in mission, making a difference, every day, in the lives of women, children and youth, around the world, and in our own communities.

If you would like more information about United Methodist Women in the Virginia Conference, contact any of the conference officers, or the district president from your area.  Each of those officers is willing to help!
