    Senate 1-804-698-7410

Why are we so involved?

“...what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”  Micah 6:8 (RSV)

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.  For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.... For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.”  Romans 13:1 & 6 (RSV)

From the “Social Principles of the United Methodist Church 2009-2012,” which is part of The Discipline of the United Methodist Church:

“...The form and the leaders of all governments should be determined by exercise of the right to vote guaranteed to all adult citizens....”  Para. 164V. A)

“...The church should continually exert a strong ethical influence upon the state, supporting policies and programs deemed to be just and opposing policies and programs that are unjust.”  Para. 164V. B) “Government and laws should be servants of God and of human beings.  Citizens have a duty to abide by laws duly adopted by orderly and just process of government.  But governments, no less than individuals, are subject to the judgment of God....

Para. 164V. F)
