SMR Price Increase Maintains Margin for Mission
Beginning Jan 1,
2007, the price of the basic SMR pin increased from $35 to $40 and the price of
the sapphire SMR pin from $50 to $60. Prices of other pins - pearl, $100;
emerald, $200; ruby, $500; diamond, $100, and double diamond, $2000 - will
remain the same. The cost to acquire the metal for the pins has increased.
Special Mission Recognitions are given to honor individuals’ work for and
commitment to mission. They are given to members of UMW and beyond to others in
churches and society. They recognize the important roles individuals play in
mission in their local and global communities. Special Mission Recognitions can be given by groups, like UMW units,
or by individuals:
♥ acknowledge a church member who has served as a missionary;
♥ honor a UMW member for her service to the organization;
♥ show appreciation to a young woman who is a tutor in the church’s
after-school program;
♥ thank the director of the local food pantry for her or his work in the
community;
♥ recognize a pastor who shows dedication to mission.
Jean Frances Craig Mission Fund established in 1998.
♥ It is stipulated that the income shall be used for missionary projects at
home and abroad.
♥ Written applications for grants must be submitted to the Treasurer by
March first and shall include the following information:
name and nature of the
project,
amount requested and how it shall be used,
name of person or institution requesting the grant, and
complete contact information.
♥ Recommendations shall be submitted by the Finance Committee to the
Executive Committee for approval.
A Call to Prayer and Self- Denial 2008 “Learning for a Lifetime”
Keep on doing
the things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God
of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:9)
The 2008 A Call
to Prayer and Self-Denial offering will fund programs at mission institutions
related to the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist
Church. United States institutions include community center, women’s
residences, schools, colleges, and residential treatment centers. International institutions include hostels and residences, hospitals and
clinics, schools, and community or daycare centers. The total offering will be
divided equally between U.S. and international mission institutions.
AT OUR 2007 CONFERENCE ANNUAL
MEETING
The Katharine Kyle Memorial Scholarship Fund was awarded to
Rose Henshaw, Richmond District, to be used for a mission trip to Honduras to
work in homes for rescued street boys and Samantha Spencer, Roanoke District, a
student at Radford University studying Early Childhood Special Education.
The Carroll Palmer Estate Fund was awarded to Joan
Wasserott, Charlottesville District, for her mission work in the maternity ward,
Chicuque Hospital, Mozambique and to Women’s Division Mission Giving.

Nothing But Nets
Offering
A special offering was
taken to help the Ferrum Christian Fellowship Group and Praise Band raise funds
for “Nothing But Nets.” This is a program sponsored by the United Nations
Foundation and others, including the United Methodist Church, to provide
mosquito netting and other health benefits to children in Africa. The goal is to
eliminate malaria on the entire continent. The offering totaled $925.00.

Mozambique
(October 30, 2007) An
email was received from Rosalia Muricio Queface, UMW Secretary in Maputo,
Mozambique, thanking the UMW Unit that provided $380.00 to buy uniforms for
school children.
(November 5, 2007) An email was received from Ilda Suzana thanking
the Conference UMW for $800.00 she received. This money is for a scholarship for
Ilda and her husband Naftal to study at Africa University, where Naftal is in
seminary and Ilda is getting a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
