Become a Rainbow Giver in 2010

     The Virginia Conference United Methodist Women is starting the Rainbow Giver Program in 2010.  This is an opportunity for you, as an individual, to personally give to the 5 Channels of Mission Giving:

Your gift of $ 60.00 will make you a Rainbow Giver:

  • $ 40.00 to give someone special  a Special Mission Recognition Pin
  • $ 5.00 to give a Pledge to Mission (in addition to your regular pledge)
  • $ 5.00 for  a Gift to Mission Card
  • $ 5.00 for a Gift in Memory Card
  • $ 5.00 for a gift to World Thank Offering ( this can be in addition to your change box)

It is so easy to become a Rainbow Giver; just fill out the form on the back and give the form to your unit treasurer with a check for $ 60.00.  On the form please specify which Gift to Mission Card you want and the name of the recipient of the Special Mission Recognition pin.   This form and the $ 60.00 should be given to your treasurer at one time, not spread out over the year.  Anyone can become a Rainbow Giver; this is an opportunity for church members, spouses, or friends to participate in UMW Mission Giving. This award is not to replace your Pledge and World Thank Offering, but is giving you, as an individual, an opportunity to contribute to all the areas of Mission Giving.

 To be recognized as a Rainbow Giver at your Annual meeting in 2010, please give this form to your Unit Treasurer by August 15, 2010.

If you have questions about becoming a Rainbow Giver, please call the Virginia Conference Treasurer, Hatsy Droke, at 757-851-2133, or contact your district treasurer.

Grants and Scholarships

The changes in our country’s financial markets have also affected our UMW grants; as the principle of each of our scholarship funds has decreased we have found that it will not be possible to give some of our grants and scholarships this year. We will award our Virginia Originals Scholarships and our Grants for Ethnic Minority Women. The Virginia Originals Scholarships are awarded to any women who have never attended a conference UMW event. This scholarship will cover one-half of the cost of registration, room and board not including travel to one of these events: Spiritual Life Retreat, School of Christian Mission Weekend (or dollar equivalent for the week), Young Women’s Retreat, and UMW Conference Annual Meeting. The Ethnic Minority Women Grants will cover registration, room and board to one of these events, Spiritual Life Retreat, School of Christian Mission Weekend (dollar equivalent for the week), Young Women’s Retreat, and UMW Conference Annual Meeting. Applications for both of these scholarships can be obtained from your District President.

SMR Price Increase Maintains Margin for Mission

Beginning Jan 1, 2007, the price of the basic SMR pin increased from $35 to $40 and the price of the sapphire SMR pin from $50 to $60. Prices of other pins - pearl, $100; emerald, $200; ruby, $500; diamond, $1000, and double diamond, $2000 - will remain the same. The cost to acquire the metal for the pins has increased.

Special Mission Recognitions are given to honor individuals’ work for and commitment to mission. They are given to members of UMW and beyond to others in churches and society. They recognize the important roles individuals play in mission in their local and global communities. Special Mission Recognitions can be given by groups, like UMW units, or by individuals:

    ♥    acknowledge a church member who has served as a missionary;

    ♥    honor a UMW member for her service to the organization;

    ♥    show appreciation to a young woman who is a tutor in the church’s after-school program;

    ♥    thank the director of the local food pantry for her or his work in the community;

    ♥    recognize a pastor who shows dedication to mission.

Blessings

It is in telling the stories of mission that we pass on to others how important Mission giving is. If you want to know where your money goes, all you have to do is read Response Magazine .
