Welcome!

The Purpose

The purpose of the Reading Program is to encourage United Methodist Women :

  • to expand understanding of participation in God's mission;
  • to increase sensitivity to all human beings--their needs, interests, and contemporary life;
  • to encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today;
  • to grow in understanding of scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life;
  • to enhance self-knowledge and to act from that knowledge;
  • to strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.

The Women's Division recommends a diverse range of books with the intention of broadening exposure to a variety of concepts. The Division does not intend that accept each word or idea contained within each volume. Some books you may agree with. Some you may not. Either is all right. At the least you know the Women's Division cares and wants you to be a knowledgeable and caring Christian about the issues of the day.

Welcome!

United Methodist Women

A Children's Reading Program is available to children in the Virginia Conference United Methodist Women. We know moms, dads and grandparents are reading to children, many times selecting books from the United Methodist Women’s Reading Program list.

Now, we want to give children an opportunity to read these books, receive credit when the criteria are met and then receive a Reading Program certificate. Since United Methodist Women are concerned about ALL children, we want to invite any child wishing to participate. Some units may have a circle of elementary school girls, but anyone can participate. This program is for children 3-12. Books may be read to children.  Children with appropriate reading skills should read the books themselves.

The reading list offers a wide variety of subjects to not only increase awareness of global concerns, but also to enhance spirituality and concern for others in the community. This is an excellent way to let children be involved, learn more about the Purpose and feel the concern of the United Methodist Women for children.

You may get complete information regarding the Children’s Reading Program, including guidelines and suggestions, the book list and a report form, from your District Secretary of Program Resources.  A special certificate will be prepared for children who complete the program and will be presented at your District Annual Meeting.
